Controller

Summary: Sault Tribe Incorporated (STI), established in 2020, is hiring a Controller to oversee accounting and finance for STI and its subsidiaries. STI is wholly owned by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians as a Federally chartered entity, created to benefit tribal members through job creation and assistance programs through private enterprise. As the senior-most accounting and finance position in this early-stage company, the Controller will be critical to furthering this mission through:
  • Managing STI’s accounting systems, procedures, and policies;
  • Track, analyze and report on financial activity and information including budgets, planning, and required filings and reports; and
  • Supporting organizational strategy and decision-making.
 
As an early stage hire in our business, the Controller will support in all levels of accounting and financial duties. The Controller will have the ability to develop a team and increase their level of responsibility depending on company growth and their performance. The controller must support in additional areas, as needed, such as contracts management, RFP’s, pricing, financial IT, etc.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):
 
  • Planning, directing, coordinating and participating in all accounting operational functions, including performing accounting duties as needed.
  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results
  • Coordinating and preparing internal and external monthly and annual financial statements
  • Coordinating activities of external auditors
  • Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
  • Managing the budget process for STI and its subsidiaries, as well as projects
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes
  • Evaluating and continuous improvement of accounting and internal control systems
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed, and maximizing beneficial use of these systems.
  • Developing and monitoring business performance metrics
  • Overseeing regulatory reporting, frequently including tax planning and compliance
  • Hiring, training and retaining skilled accounting staff
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES
All assigned resources and personnel.
 
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline required.
  • Three to five years of accounting experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting.
  • Understanding of and ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Highly proficient with accounting software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Experience working in a multi-state environment. Knowledge of contracts and contract negotiation. 
  • Payroll experience (multi-state preferred).
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local tax compliance regulations and reporting. 
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks and eFAACT
  • Working knowledge of Government contracting strongly preferred. 
    • Knowledge of government invoicing systems, to include: Wide Area WorkFlow (WAWF), Contract Payment Reporting Module (CPRM), Delphi eInvoicing
    • Knowledge of Joint Travel Regulations (JTR)

  • Current Certified Public Account certification (CPA) preferred.
