Business Development Specialist

Position: Business Development Specialist (BD Specialist), Sault Tribe Incorporated Sault Tribe, Inc. (STI) was created by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians in 2019 to provide a creative avenue for expanding Native business opportunities, enhancing jobs and the local economy. STI is the independent business arm of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, serving as a holding company for both wholly-owned tribal businesses and joint ventures. STI has grown very quickly, creating four successful and diverse subsidiaries and partnerships and recently achieved federal 8a certification for one of those companies.

Responsibilities:
STI’s federal division, established in 2020, is hiring its first BD Specialist to build a robust pipeline for its federal contracting subsidiaries. The BD Specialist will leverage existing relationships, develop new relationships, and utilize a limited body of existing past performance to develop high probability of win, profitable opportunities for direct award or limited competition. Current service offerings include:

  • Instructional design, training and education
  • Media production
  • Information technology
  • Environmental remediation
  • Construction management
As an early-stage hire in our business, the BD Specialist will support in multiple areas, such as marketing, client development, capture management, and proposal writing, and contribute to establishing a business development process and CRM system for STI’s federal division.

Key Result Areas:
  • Contract wins – Deliver a target of $20M in wins year one, achieving $150M by year five.
  • Robust pipeline – Provide a realistic pipeline with thorough activity reporting throughout the year to deliver contract win goals, as measurable by p-win accuracy over time.
  • Establish relationships – Establish a growing network of relationships with target Federal agencies and clients and partners that add value in pursuing these targets as a prime or subcontractor.
  • Business development process – Develop and/or contribute to establishing a repeatable/trainable business development process.
  • Team player – Provide responsive support across STI Federal both proactively, and on request.
 
Required Qualifications:

  • 10 years of experience in business development activities with at least 5 in federal government contracting.
  • Must have demonstrated experience increasing sales and winning federal government contracts, including IDIQs, task orders, and stand-alone contracts, in the range of $10-50M.
  • Experience with 8(a) direct awards preferred.
 
Skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Deep knowledge and experience in federal contracting.
  • Strong existing relationships in federal contracting, and ability to develop new relationships.
  • Negotiation, and business development skills.
  • Detailed research, strategy, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated in the face of uncertainty and driven to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to successfully pass a drug screen and a federal background check required.

Working Conditions:
Confidentiality Required. General office environment. Position requires mobility and prolonged sitting and standing; requires flexible working hours. Travel is required up to 50%.
 
Compensation:
$150-$200K salary; including bonus structure, is available for the right candidate.

Work Location:
Remote; Sault Saint Marie, Michigan; or Denver, Colorado

Native American Preferred – Sault Tribe Member/Family preferred.
